Close Friends: meaning on Instagram

Also called: “green ring”, “close friends list”

Definition

Close Friends is an Instagram feature that lets you share stories and posts with a hand-picked list — marked by a green ring — instead of all your followers. Only people on the list can see that content, and they can't see who else is on it. Instagram does not notify anyone when you add or remove them from your Close Friends list.

People use Close Friends for more personal, casual, or unfiltered posts they don't want their whole audience to see — closer to a finsta, but on their main account. The green ring around a story is the tell that you're in someone's Close Friends.

Because the list is private and silent, you can't tell whether you were removed, only that a green-ring story you used to see has stopped appearing.

Frequently asked

Does Instagram tell you if you're added to Close Friends?

No. There's no notification either way. You only know you're on the list because you can see that person's green-ring Close Friends stories.

Can you see someone's Close Friends list?

No. A user's Close Friends list is private — even the people on it can't see the full list.
