Finsta: meaning on Instagram

Also called: “fake instagram”, “spam account”, “rinsta”

Definition

A finsta — short for "fake Instagram" — is a secondary, usually private account someone keeps alongside their main "rinsta" (real Instagram). Finstas have a small, trusted follower list and are used to post unfiltered, casual, or joke content away from family, coworkers, or a wider audience. The main account stays curated for everyone; the finsta is the honest, low-stakes one.

The finsta/rinsta split is really about audience control: the public account is the polished highlight reel, while the finsta is where someone posts freely for a handful of close friends. Handles are often deliberately silly or obscure so they're hard to find.

It's a normal privacy strategy, not inherently deceptive — the "fake" in finsta refers to it being unofficial, not to impersonating anyone.

Frequently asked

What does finsta mean?

"Fake Instagram" — a private secondary account for a small circle of close friends, kept separate from the main public "rinsta."

Are finstas against Instagram's rules?

No. Instagram allows multiple accounts. A finsta only breaks the rules if it's used to impersonate someone or otherwise violate the Community Guidelines.
