Does Instagram tell you when someone unfollows you?

The short answer

No. Instagram never sends a notification when someone unfollows you — your follower count just quietly drops by one. There's no native list of who left, so the only way to know is to compare your follower list over time or use a follow tracker that snapshots it for you and flags the accounts that disappeared.

This is a deliberate design choice: Instagram doesn't surface unfollows to reduce drama and discourage obsessive count-watching. The absence of a notification is exactly why unfollows feel invisible.

Because Instagram won't tell you, the mechanic is always comparison. Save your follower list, check it again later, and whoever is missing unfollowed you — which a tracker does automatically so you don't have to eyeball a long list.

Do any apps get a real-time unfollow alert from Instagram?

No. Instagram has no unfollow event to subscribe to. Every tracker works by comparing follower-list snapshots, not by a live alert.

Is it safe to use an unfollow tracker?

Yes, if it never asks for your password and reads only public data. Avoid any app demanding your login credentials.
