Does Instagram notify you when you screenshot a story?

The short answer

No. Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot or screen-record a story, a feed post, or a reel — the person will never know you captured it. The one exception is disappearing photos and videos sent inside a private DM (view-once or vanish mode): screenshot those and the sender is alerted. Public stories and posts are always safe to screenshot.

Instagram tested story-screenshot notifications years ago and never rolled them out. Today, screenshots of stories, posts, reels, and profiles are completely silent.

The only screenshot alert lives in direct messages, and only for ephemeral media — a view-once or disappearing photo/video. Screenshot one of those and the other person sees a note in the chat. Ordinary DM text and permanent photos don't trigger it.

Does Instagram notify screenshots of disappearing DM photos?

Yes. View-once and disappearing photos/videos in a DM alert the sender if you screenshot them. That's the only case.

Can someone tell if I screen-record their story?

No. Screen recording a story or post is treated the same as a screenshot — no notification is sent.
