Suggested for You: meaning on Instagram

Also called: “suggested accounts”, “recommended for you”

Definition

"Suggested for You" is Instagram's algorithmic list of accounts it recommends you follow, based on mutual followers, your synced contacts, and accounts similar to ones you already follow or interact with. A common myth is that someone appears there because they searched for or viewed your profile. Instagram says suggestions are not based on who looked you up.

The recommendations lean on your existing graph: friends of friends, people in your contacts, and accounts that people like you tend to follow. Interacting with someone (DMs, profile visits you make, shared connections) can raise the odds they're suggested to you.

So seeing a specific person suggested doesn't mean they've been checking your profile — it usually just means you share connections or interests with them.

Frequently asked

Does Suggested for You mean someone looked at my profile?

No. Instagram states suggestions aren't based on who viewed your profile. They come from mutual connections, contacts, and similar-account signals.

Why does the same person keep getting suggested?

Usually because you share many mutual followers, they're in your contacts, or you've interacted with related accounts — not because either of you searched the other.
