Vanish mode: meaning on Instagram

Definition

Vanish mode is an Instagram DM setting where messages disappear once you close the chat or both people leave the conversation. You turn it on by swiping up inside a direct-message thread. It's designed for spontaneous, off-the-record chats — but Instagram notifies the other person if you screenshot a vanish-mode message, so it isn't fully private or untraceable.

Vanish mode applies to a single conversation and only affects messages sent while it's on; turning it off returns the thread to normal. Both people see a note that vanish mode is active.

Because it leaves the main chat history clean once messages disappear, it's sometimes associated with secretive messaging — but the screenshot alert is a meaningful limit on how "invisible" it really is.

Frequently asked

Does vanish mode notify you of screenshots?

Yes. If you screenshot a message sent in vanish mode, Instagram tells the other person — the same as screenshotting a disappearing photo or video in DMs.

Can you recover vanish-mode messages?

Generally no. Once the chat is closed the messages are removed for both people and aren't restored in the thread.
