Free Tools to Check Who Someone Follows on Instagram (Honest Review)

Quick Answer

Out of seven "free" Instagram follow trackers tested in 2026: four require login or paid upgrade for anything useful (the "free" framing is the hook), two don't work as advertised at all, and one (IGExport's free tier) mostly delivers but is capped to 100 accounts per search and lacks alerts. If you want real-time alerts without logging in, the free tier doesn't exist — Lurk at $1 first week is the cheapest serious option. Below: the seven, what each actually does, and where the pricing-vs-features inflection point lands.

The 7 "free" Instagram follow trackers — tested honestly

Across three test conditions: a public celebrity account (cristiano), a personal account in our control, and a moderate-follow personal account. Tested over a 14-day window.

1. IGExport / Recent Follow. Free tier exists, no login required for spot checks. Caps at 100 accounts per search. Sort by date requires login. No alerts.

2. IGDetective. Free tier exists. Polished UI. Limited to ~30 visible recent follows. No alerts. Paid tier required for deeper history.

3. Followmeter. Listed as "free." Actually requires Instagram login. Pulls your follower analytics, not other accounts'. Doesn't do what people searching for "free follow tracker" think it does.

4. InstaTracker. "Free unlocked" framing. Requires email signup + 30-second ads between every action. After 3 free spot-checks, prompts you to pay $4.99/wk. Not actually free.

5. UnfollowApp. Free tier exists. Lets you see who unfollowed YOU, not who someone else follows. Misnamed in most "free Instagram follow tracker" lists.

6. Reports+. "Free with limits." The limits are aggressive — 1 free profile check per day, requires watching an ad for each, login required from the first check.

7. Lurk (free preview). Not framed as free, but the unauthenticated profile lookup at getlurk.app/username shows a one-time recent-follow snapshot. Real tracking is paid ($1 first week, $19/wk after).

What changed when we rechecked this list in September 2026

We went back through all seven on September 15, 2026 and the list moved under us. InstaTracker is gone. Its domain now bounces to a for sale page and there is no app by that name in the US App Store. IGExport raised its free web cap to 100 per search. Snoopreport is selling at 99 cents a week on its own homepage, way under the range in our chart below. And IGDetective posts a real price now, $12 a week or $30 a month for up to 5 profiles, and says on its own page that its unfollow tracking has been unavailable since Instagram's September 9 update.

The other thing that moved is the names. Search this today and you run into tools that were not on our list at all. RavenTracker charges $3.99 a week for Pro and says outright that you do not have to connect your own Instagram to read public activity. IGTracker from ExtensionsFox runs a free preview of up to 100 recent following with no login and sells a Chrome extension for the full lists. InsTrack says it tested eight tools side by side over six weeks. Every one of them runs the same play: a free spot check, then a wall for anything ongoing. Meanwhile Influencer Marketing Hub's roundup is still headlined "Top 10 Instagram Followers Trackers for 2025".

One limit did not move an inch. Every tool on this page reads public accounts only. IGDetective says it flat out: "No legitimate tool can show a private account's follows or followers, and any service claiming otherwise is not telling the truth." The Ick says the same: "Private accounts cannot be tracked by any tool." IGTracker just shows you a message that the account is private. A private profile is shut to all of them, free or paid.

A free tool hands you one snapshot and then forgets it. Lurk keeps comparing snapshots of a public following list and tells you when a name gets added or drops off, newest first, with no Instagram login on your side. It starts the clock the second you put in their username, so the sooner you start it the more you catch.

The 4 that lie about being free

Followmeter. Free in the App Store sense but useless for the actual use case (tracking someone else's follow activity). It's a personal-analytics app marketed as a tracker.

InstaTracker. Email gate + ad gate + paywall after 3 uses. The "free" claim survives technical scrutiny in that you can complete one action without paying. The reality is paid-with-extra-steps.

Reports+. Per-day limits + ad-wall + login wall. Technically free; functionally a trial.

Followmeter / similar. Variant: free for self-analytics, paid for anything else.

The pattern across all four: "free" is the SEO hook. The product is paid.

The question every one of these lists skips: does it want your Instagram password?

This is the split that decides whether a free tracker is a bad deal or an actual problem, and almost no roundup makes it. Some of these read a public profile from the outside and never ask you for anything. Others want you to connect your own Instagram inside their app, and that is the group that gets accounts flagged. UpGrow ran a two month 2026 test of more than 40 of these apps and found only 5 met its safety standards on iPhone and Android.

When you connect your Instagram to one of these apps you are not just handing over a password. You are handing over the ability to act as you. UpGrow puts it plainly: once you hand over your login, that app "can control actions on your account, scrape data, or trip Instagram's fraud systems." That is why Influencer Marketing Hub runs a whole section called "How to Safely Track Your Followers Without Risking Account Suspension", and why The Ick lists "a required Instagram login for a tool that is supposed to monitor other people" as a red flag.

Sort the list by that one question and it gets very simple.

Notice what the login column does not buy you. The apps in the yes row still cannot show you who someone ELSE follows. You hand over access to your account and what you get back is your own follower count.

The rule that survives every version of this list: if a tracker wants you to connect your Instagram in order to show you someone ELSE's activity, it is not reading their profile from the outside, it is driving your account to do it. There is no safe version of that.

And the one nobody answers straight: none of this works on a private account. Not the free ones, not the $30 a month ones. If the profile is private, the following list is not public data, so nothing reaches it. The first red flag on The Ick's own list is "claims about private accounts, message reading or profile-view tracking", which tells you how often somebody tries to sell you one anyway.

The 2 that don't work as advertised

UnfollowApp is mis-categorised. It tracks who unfollowed YOU, not who else follows. Useful product, wrong category in most lists.

InstaTracker technically works but the data is wrong. In our test it surfaced "recent follows" that included accounts the target had followed years ago, and missed actual recent additions. Either their scraper is broken or they're displaying random follows to give the appearance of activity. Either way, not useable.

The 1 that mostly works (and its limits)

IGExport's free tier is the only one that does what people actually want — show a no-login snapshot of someone's recent follows — without immediately gating on payment or login.

What works:

• No-login spot check up to 100 accounts per search
• Reasonable accuracy on the recent-follow surface
• Polished enough UI to actually use

What doesn't:

• 50-account cap means you can't use it for active accounts (most people follow more than 50)
• No sort by date — the chronological order is approximate
• No alerts — you have to come back and refresh
• Anything past the free spot-check requires login

For "spot-check once a quarter," IGExport free is fine. For ongoing monitoring, it's not the right tool.

When free is enough vs when $1/week pays for itself

Free is enough when:

• You want a one-time sanity check
• The target account has under 500 follows
• You don't care about real-time alerts
• You're willing to refresh manually whenever you want fresh data

$1/week (Lurk) pays for itself when:

• You want continuous monitoring without manual refresh
• You want real-time alerts (catches the 24-48hr follow-loops that free tools miss)
• The target account has thousands of follows (free tools cap out)
• You care about the time-stamped feed of changes (free tools don't preserve history)
• You don't want to log into Instagram credentials on a third-party service

The break-even is "do I want to be notified or do I want to refresh." Notification beats refresh for almost every active-monitoring use case. Refresh wins for one-off curiosity.

How the free ones actually bill you, and how to get out

Free here almost always means a free install with an auto renewing subscription sitting two taps in. FollowMeter's own App Store listing spells out the mechanism: the subscription "automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period." Reports+ lists its in-app purchases at $3.99 to $29.99 on its own App Store page, and Influencer Marketing Hub puts its sibling Reports for Followers at $5.99 a month. And the cancel switch is not inside the app.

Four things worth checking before you tap through any of them.

Cancelling an iPhone subscription happens in Settings, not inside the app. Apple's own steps: in Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap the subscription, then tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to find the Cancel button. If a charge keeps landing for a tracker you took off your phone months ago, that Subscriptions list is where it is still running.

The honest take: free works for spot checks. Lurk works for monitoring. Anything in between is paying enterprise prices for tools that still require login and don't push alerts.
