What Happens When You Block Someone on Instagram? Everything Explained

Blocking someone on Instagram is one of the most definitive actions you can take on the platform. But many people hesitate because they do not fully understand what happens when they hit that button. Here is a complete breakdown of every effect, from both perspectives.
What the Blocked Person Experiences
When you block someone on Instagram, here is exactly what changes for them:
They cannot find your profile
If they search for your username, your account will not appear in search results. It is as if your account does not exist.
Your profile shows "User Not Found"
If they navigate to your profile directly (via a saved link or URL), they see a blank page with "User Not Found" or "Sorry, this page isn't available." They do not see a message saying they have been blocked.
All your content disappears
- Your posts vanish from their feed
- Your Stories are no longer visible
- Your Reels disappear from their suggestions
- Comments you left on their posts become invisible to them
- Comments they left on your posts disappear
- Any group threads you share will hide your messages
They are automatically unfollowed
If they were following you, they are immediately unfollowed. If you were following them, you automatically unfollow them too. Neither party receives a notification about the unfollow.
DMs are restricted
- They cannot send you new messages
- Existing DM threads remain visible to both parties but are locked
- They cannot call you through Instagram
- They cannot video chat with you
They cannot tag or mention you
Any attempt to @mention your username will not create a link and will not send you a notification.
What You Experience After Blocking
Their content disappears from your feed
You will no longer see their posts, Stories, or Reels in your main feed, Explore page, or Reels tab.
You cannot view their profile (by default)
When you block someone, you also cannot visit their profile. Instagram prevents both directions of viewing.
However: You can view their PUBLIC profile content anonymously through Lurk. Since Lurk does not use your Instagram account, the block has no effect on what Lurk can access. If you blocked someone but still want to monitor their public activity, enter their username at getlurk.app/username.
The DM thread remains
Your existing conversation stays in your inbox. You can read old messages, but you cannot send new ones while the block is active.
You can unblock at any time
Blocking is reversible. You can unblock from Settings > Privacy > Blocked Accounts.

What Does NOT Happen When You Block
They do NOT receive a notification
Instagram does not send a "You have been blocked" notification. The blocked person has to figure it out on their own — usually by noticing they cannot find your profile.
Mutual friends are NOT notified
No one in your shared social circles receives any information about the block.
Your comments on their posts are NOT deleted
Your past comments on THEIR posts become invisible to them while the block is active, but they are not permanently deleted. If you unblock, the comments may reappear.
It does NOT affect other platforms
Blocking on Instagram does not block them on Facebook, WhatsApp, or Threads (even though Meta owns all of them). Each platform's block list is separate.
The "Restrict" Alternative
Before blocking, consider Instagram's "Restrict" feature, which is less severe:
| Feature | Block | Restrict |
|---------|-------|----------|
| Can see your posts | No | Yes |
| Can see your Stories | No | Yes |
| Can comment on posts | No | Yes (but only they see their comments) |
| Can DM you | No | Messages go to Request folder |
| Can find your profile | No | Yes |
| They know something happened | Eventually (profile disappears) | Unlikely to notice |
Restricting is useful when you want to limit someone's ability to interact with you without the dramatic effect of a full block.
How People Figure Out They Have Been Blocked
Since Instagram does not notify, people use these clues:
- Your profile disappeared from search — most obvious sign
- Mutual friends can still see your profile — confirms the account exists
- Previous DM shows "Instagram User" instead of your name
- Checking from a different account — your profile appears normally
Some people use tracking tools to detect blocks. If someone was tracking your follower count through Lurk or a similar service and your account suddenly shows unusual changes, it might coincide with blocking activity in your follower list.
Blocking and Follow Tracking
If you are tracking someone's follows through Lurk and they block an account:
- The blocked account disappears from their following list (if they were following)
- Lurk detects this as an unfollow
- You receive notification of the unfollow as usual
Similarly, if someone who follows the tracked account gets blocked:
- They disappear from the follower list
- Lurk records the follower count decrease
This means blocking has follow/unfollow implications that tracking tools detect. For more about how follow tracking works, see our complete follow tracking guide.
Common Blocking Scenarios
Blocking an Ex
The most common reason for blocking. Blocks both contact and the temptation to check their profile. However, if their account is public, you (or they) can still view content through external tools like Lurk.
Blocking a Troll or Harasser
Immediately stops all interaction. They cannot comment, DM, or view your content. For persistent harassment, also report the account.
Blocking and Unblocking to Remove a Follower
A common trick: blocking someone automatically unfollows them. You can then immediately unblock, and they will not be refollowed. They lose access to your content without a permanent block. They are not notified of either action.
Blocking During a Relationship Conflict
Some people block a partner during arguments. This is generally counterproductive — it escalates digital conflict and creates a cycle of blocking and unblocking.
What About Group Chats?
If you and the blocked person are in the same Instagram group chat:
- You can both remain in the group
- You will not see each other's messages in the group
- Other group members see all messages normally
- Neither of you can add the other to new group chats
Blocking on Instagram vs. Other Platforms
| Platform | Profile visible? | DMs accessible? | Notification sent? | Reversible? |
|----------|-----------------|-----------------|-------------------|-------------|
| Instagram | No | Locked (history visible) | No | Yes |
| Facebook | No | Removed | No | Yes |
| Twitter/X | No | Removed | No | Yes |
| TikTok | No | Removed | No | Yes |
| WhatsApp | N/A | Last seen hidden | No | Yes |
Should You Block or Just Unfollow?
Unfollow when:
- You simply do not want their content in your feed
- You have no issue with them viewing your content
- The relationship is neutral (you just drifted apart)
Block when:
- You do not want them to see your content at all
- You need to stop all forms of contact
- They are harassing you or making you uncomfortable
- You need a clean break for your mental health
Privacy After Blocking
Remember: blocking only controls what happens within Instagram. If your account is public, your content is still accessible through web browsers, search engine caches, and tools like Lurk. If you need complete content privacy, set your account to private. Read our guide on making your account private for step-by-step instructions.
