How to See Who Shared Your Instagram Post (What Instagram Actually Shows)

You cannot see exactly who shared your Instagram post. Instagram shows the total number of shares (for Business and Creator accounts) but does not reveal the specific accounts that shared it. There are some partial workarounds depending on how the post was shared.
What Instagram Shows About Shares
Total Share Count
If you have a Business or Creator account, Instagram Insights shows the total number of shares for each post. This includes:
- Shares to DMs (sending the post to someone privately)
- Shares to Stories (reposting to someone's Story)
- Shares via the share sheet (copying link, sharing to other apps)
You Cannot See Individual Sharers
The share count is an aggregate number. Instagram does not break it down by user. You cannot see a list of "people who shared this post."
The Partial Workarounds
1. Story Reshares (You CAN See These)
When someone shares your post to their Story, you receive a notification (if their account is public). You can:
- See the notification in your activity feed
- View their Story to see how they presented your post
- This only works for public accounts. Private account reshares to Stories do not trigger notifications for the original poster.
2. Tagged Mentions
If someone shares your post and tags you or mentions you in their caption or comment, you will see a notification.
3. Quote Posts
If someone screenshots your post and reposts it as their own content (not ideal, but it happens), you might find it through:
- Reverse image searching your photo
- Searching for your content's caption or hashtags
- Fans or followers alerting you to reposts
4. DM Shares (You CANNOT See These)
When someone sends your post to another person via Instagram DM, you see the share counted in your Insights total but cannot see who sent it or who received it. DM shares are completely private.

Why Share Data Matters
For Creators and Brands
Shares are the most valuable engagement metric because they represent organic distribution. When someone shares your post:
- They are recommending your content to their network
- Your content reaches people who do not follow you
- It signals to the algorithm that your content is high-quality
- It drives discovery and follower growth
For Regular Users
Share data matters less for personal accounts, but it can be interesting to know if a specific post is being passed around.
What You CAN Track on Instagram
While individual share data is limited, there are many things you can monitor:
Your Own Content Performance
Switch to a Business or Creator account (free) to access Insights:
- Reach (how many people saw your post)
- Impressions (how many times your post was viewed)
- Profile visits from each post
- Saves, likes, comments, and total shares
- Follower demographics and active times
Other People's Activity
- Follow tracking: See who someone follows and unfollows with Lurk
- Story viewing: Watch anyone's Stories anonymously with the Story viewer
- Profile monitoring: Track bio changes, follower counts, and profile picture updates
Maximizing Shareable Content
Since you cannot see individual sharers, focus on creating content that encourages sharing:
Content Types That Get Shared Most
- Informational carousels: Tips, guides, and educational content
- Relatable memes: Content people share with friends saying "this is us"
- Inspirational quotes: Especially with clean, branded design
- Shocking statistics or facts: Content that makes people say "did you know?"
- Opinion posts: Controversial or thought-provoking takes that spark discussion
Technical Optimization for Shares
- Make the first slide compelling: People decide to share within the first 1 to 2 seconds
- Include a call to action: "Share this with someone who needs to hear it"
- Use a clean design: Posts with readable text on clean backgrounds are shared more than cluttered designs
- Keep it relevant: Timely content gets shared more than evergreen content
Common Questions
Can I see who shared my Reel?
The same rules apply. You can see the total share count but not individual sharers. Story reshares of your Reel will generate notifications if the sharer's account is public.
Can I see who shared my Story?
No. Instagram does not provide share data for Stories. You cannot see if someone forwarded your Story via DM.
Does someone know I shared their post?
Only if you share it to your Story (they get a notification if your account is public) or if you tag them. DM shares are anonymous.
Can I prevent people from sharing my posts?
You can disable sharing for individual posts, but this limits your content's organic reach. Going private restricts sharing to approved followers only. See our guide to making your account private.
The Bottom Line
Instagram gives you share counts but not individual sharers. Story reshares are the one exception where you get notifications. For everything else, shares are anonymous.
